Medicare Psychology
Medicare creates affordable psychology options for Australians to seek the mental health support they need.
Please note that we are not a bulk billing psychology practice, but we do provide a range of affordable counselling packages to ensure there are accessible alternatives. Claiming a counselling session through Medicare is only one of a few options to access affordable psychology.
What is a Mental Health care Plan
The Mental Health Care Plan is the set number of sessions you are entitled to claim through a Medicare rebate in a period of a year. This resets each calendar year and is released in blocks at your GP’s discretion. The typical process is:
- Visit your GP for a MHCP
- Attend 6 sessions
- MHCP review with your Psych and GP
- Potential release of further session
- Repeat up until a maximum of 20 a year (as at Oct 2021)

What is a ‘gap’ payment?
How much does a session ACTUALLY cost?
The term ‘gap’ payment refers to the gap between the rebate and the price of the session. To make it as transparent as possible, we have created the above for a clear breakdown of price/rebate and cost to give you a better understanding.
Looking for Couples or Family Counselling?
Unfortunately Medicare does not cover relationship counselling, couples counselling or family counselling and thus there is no rebate applicable. You are able to access these services through privately paying for those sessions. But don’t worry! We still offer very affordable options and packages designed to help you get the services you seek.
Affordable Pyschology Sessions from less than $40*
With our affordable counselling packages, we offer a range of privately paid bulk sessions at a much lower price. Take a look at the options, find the one that suits you, and get started!
